APD Evaluation
- An APD evaluation consists of three parts: the consultation, the assessment, and the report.
- A consultation involves a detailed background of the persons learning and language development as well as other relevant information.
- An assessment includes several tests to gather information relating to different auditory processes. These include an assessment of outer, middle and inner ear function (peripheral hearing), assessing how the brain combines speech information from both ears; how well the brain distinguishes different patterns of sound; how the brain orders and remembers sound information and how the brain listens to speech when there is noise in the background.
- A comprehensive report is written including results, a diagnosis and recommendations. If the person is eligible, the report may be used to access government funding.
- The APD consultation, assessment and comprehensive report costs $720
APD Treatment
- Following an APD evaluation it may be recommended to have treatment.
- Treatment may involve consultation and advice, auditory training, provision of assistive hearing technology such as remote microphone hearing aid systems (RMHAs) and referral to other professionals.
- Follow-up is essential to verify progress.
- Funding for RMHA systems may be available through the Ministry of Education. Fitting and service costs will vary depending on recommended treatment.
