Family Audiology is a Wellington based independent, locally owned and operated audiology business run by Gemma Sheehan. Gemma is an audiologist who has worked for twelve years in private audiology practices in Auckland and Wellington specialising in diagnostics, hearing aid fittings and Auditory Processing Disorder (APD).
Before studying audiology, Gemma graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Victoria University in Wellington whilst she and her husband raised their two young children. Her interest in APD developed whilst doing her Masters of Audiology at The University of Auckland where she chose to research APD as the topic for her thesis. She had personal experience with the importance of hearing well when one of her children had ear infections in their first year of school and the extent to which that disrupted their learning. Glue ear, resulting from chronic ear infections is one of the biggest contributing factors to having APD.
Although thoroughly enjoying her time in private practice Gemma has remained particularly interested in children’s hearing and how it impacts on learning in the classroom. Gemma has observed a need for specialised APD services in Wellington which inspired her to open an APD focused clinic.
Gemma is a full member of the New Zealand Audiological Society (NZAS) .
